Camp

Liv started camp this past Friday. When I picked her up I could see the absolute delight in her eyes. "How was your first day?" I asked her.

"I made a new friend. One. Only one."

"That's nice sweetie. What's her name?"

"Kara. She's my best friend. Only one. We played together but no boys."

"No boys? You didn't make friends with any of the boys?"

"I hate boys!"

"Why?"

"Because boys are...boys are....they're so meanie!"

She has this aversion to all things boy. Except her daddy, of course. Liv loves her daddy and still wants to marry him.

I asked her what things she did at camp that day.

"We played and played and had our lunch. Oh! We went swimming in the pool!"

She was very excited to report the swimming. And then she says, her voice full of excitement and surprise: "I went swimming and I didn't even drown!"

Conversations with a Toddler

"You know what, Mom?" Liv says, her little nose scrunched up.

"What?"

"Do you ever notice that all of Kai Lan's friends are animals? Isn't that weird?"

"Totally weird."

And then we're watching Nurse Jackie and she says about one of the characters, "That girl looks fat."

I don't like to hear her talk this way about people, even fictional people. So I say, "I think she's lovely."

"Well, I like her hair but she's got a big dress and I think she might be fat."

Sigh.

Ballerinas

Confidence

Todd is getting dressed this morning. I compliment him on how good he looks since he's been working out. "Eh. I'm still fat. I have a lot of work to do." Liv shakes her little head and says, "You gotta have confidence."

Big Girls Don't Cry

"Why are you crying, mom?"

"Because the movie is sad."

"Stop crying, Mom. Crying is for babies not for mommies!"

Monster Mouth

Punk Rock Girl

I try to encourage Liv to embrace her inner rock star. I want her to grow up confident, creative and strong. I want her to negotiate the world on her own terms, make her mark, live freely and with abandon. She is the "something wild and unruly" I vowed to grow on my wedding day. Here's my punk rock Liv. If she was 18 today, I'd totally take her to get something pierced.

The Boss of Monsters

My bathroom sink This is "The Boss of Monsters" according to Olivia. Good to know.

Olivia is attempting to negotiate with The Boss of Monsters to obtain all her mystical powers.
I'd say it worked.
